Job Description
Position Summary: The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and emergency response programs to ensure a secure environment for all congregants, staff, volunteers, and visitors. This role supports the mission of the church by proactively managing safety protocols during services, events, and throughout the church campus.
Key Responsibilities: - Develop and enforce safety protocols for weekend services, midweek activities, and large-scale events.
- Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency services as needed.
- Coordinate with Human Resource Office to ensure safe process during employee terminations.
- Maintain and control integrity of access badges and executive level parking.
- Ensure safe ingress/egress of church congregants, leaders, staff, protection officers.
- Monitor all entrances, exits, and high-traffic areas to maintain a secure perimeter.
- Coordinate with church departments for large scale events and conference security projects.
Emergency Preparedness
- Ensure that emergency equipment, such as first aid kits, AEDs, fire extinguishers, and evacuation signage, is easily accessible, clearly marked, and regularly reviewed for functionality.
- Regularly review emergency response plans to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone during services, events, and regular activities.
- Conduct regular reviews of safety drills and preparedness training, ensuring you have a clear understanding of how to respond calmly and effectively in any crisis.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local first responders, ensuring a mutual understanding of roles and responsibilities in case of an emergency.
- Work with key ministry teams, including Children's, Youth, and Worship, to review and update emergency plans, ensuring they reflect the specific needs of each group and prioritize everyone’s safety.
Risk Management
- Perform regular safety audits of the facilities and parking lots.
- Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
- Assist with incident investigations and provide reports and recommendations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of all safety-related incidents, inspections, and interventions.
- Document incident reports promptly and ensure follow-up actions are tracked and completed via Omnigo.
- Ensure all documentation complies with church policies, legal standards, and insurance requirements.
Qualifications: - Background in law enforcement, military, emergency response, or a related field
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and act quickly under pressure
- Competency in using security equipment and technology (e.g., radios, CCTV)
Preferred: - Experience working in a church or nonprofit setting
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Familiarity with child safety and vulnerable adult protection policies
- Understanding of large venue crowd management
Work Conditions: - Weekend and evening hours required, including holidays and special events
- Must be able to stand, walk, and patrol the facility for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally
